Other Wildlife Issues •
The winter of 1983 was especially hard on deer and elk in Routt County. The Colorado
Division of Wildlife conducted a feeding program in order to minimize the impacts on The
big game populations. In response to this situation, the employees at Seneca Mine and
Colorado-Ute took up a voluntary collection to buy feed for the deer and elk and Seneca
employees spread this feed on accessible areas within the mine site.
The other big game related issue relates to shrub establishment within the reclamation at
the Seneca II Mine. Vegetation monitoring data is presented in Tab 10 of this permit
renewal package. In a letter from W. D. Clark (CDOW) to V. R. Pfannenstiel (PCC, June
I I, 1981), Mr. Clark stated, "..... I want to mention how good the land form looks on
some of your reclaimed areas. I am confident that some "cover" has been developed by
relief in the terrain. I feel this may be quite useful for reestablishing the cover com-
ponent prior to sufficient shrub growth....:'
Finally, in response to a discussion between Anne Baldridge (CMLRD) and Craig Jennings
(PCC) during a mine inspection on July 18, 1985, Peabody submitted Minor Revision No.
19 to C-80-005 on July 31, 1985, which pertained to establishment of various small •
mammal habitat sites in topsoil replacement areas at the Seneca II Mine. These sites are
typically clusters of large rocks and boulders which offer shelter to marmots and other
small mammals. Such sites offer a diversity not typically found in previous recla-
mation. As an additional measure, shrub seeding/planting densities will be increased in
areas immediately surrounding these "marmot hotels."
6~~ ~ abo ~~ use ~.,.,,~-~ wlu o.~e G~~~PSf ?
n
14-I-4 Revised 3-21-86
