The area the pit will be located in
is mapped as winter range for both deer and elk in our Wildlife Resource Information
System, but it is not a, crucial area for either species. It should be recognized,
however, that the area in question has been subjected to a vast increase in traffic as a
result of gas development west of the Animas River. The gravel pit will add to this
increase. Any consideration that can be given to wintering big game, such as minimizing
operations during the winter (15 November to 15 April) and confining activities during
this time period to the middle of the day would help to mitigate these impacts.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
incerely,
C <'~
Gary Skiba
Wildlife Biologist
xc: Bob Clark-CDOW
Mike Zgainer-CDOW
Kevin Ellis-CDOW
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
