' Draft: March 24, / 999 ~ ~ Page 1
1 American Soda, L.L.P.
Yankee Gulch Sodium Minerals Project
' GROUNDWATER AND SURFACE WATER MONITORING PLAN
1.0 INTRODUCTION
' The monitoring plan for the American Soda, L.L.P. (American Soda) Yankee Gulch Sodium
Minerals Project applies to the first phase (0-5 years) of commercial mining. This monitoring plan
' has been prepared in response to the Draft Environmental Impact Station (DEIS) for the project, for
submittal to the U. S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as documentation of the monitoring
' program American Soda intends to implement during commercial solution mining operations.
The objective of the groundwater and surface water monitoring plan is to establish
' recognizable trends in water quality and flow such that any deviation from the established
characteristics is recognizable. This will be accomplished by monitoring of a network of
' groundwatermonitoringwehs, surface water monitoring stations, and production facilities. Baseline
monitoring will commence during September 1999. This will provide a full yeaz of baseline data
' prior to commercial mining operations.
1
2.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING PLAN
' To monitor ground water quality and water levels for the 0-5 year mine panel, American
Soda will use a network of 23 monitoring well completions (as detailed in Figure 1). The Upper
' Aquifer will be monitored by 11 different monitoring well completions, and the Lower Aquifer will
be monitored by 9 monitoring well completions. The alluvial aquifer will be monitored by 3
monitoring wells. In addition to the 10 existing monitoring wells, American Soda will construct 3
new multiple-completion monitoring wells and 2 new alluvium monitoring wells.
' To assure complete monitoring of the Upper and Lower Aquifers, each aquifer will be
monitored in two stratigraphic locations. Monitoring wells installed in the Upper Aquifer will be
' completed with screened intervals either neaz the base of the Uinta Formation or within (or
immediately above) the A Groove. Monitoring wells installed in the Lower Aquifer will be
' completed with screened intervals either in the B Groove orjust above the Dissolution Surface.
Agapito Associates, Inc.
1
