IRO?;: TOTl:L S'°F~.`:T~7 SJL=DS (!~~~'S) k'?J ;J,.`;;.•,t:=S°:
( 7CTAL SJSFD`;C~.'J SJi.I^S I'_n/TSS ~'.T'_CS e:=~'! :':C:;TH x'JRK
• Fe:TSS and t:n:TSS ratios tirere ex a^ined to see if there were any consistent
patterns, either by station or season, that related the water sedi-~ent load to
iron and rrangan.se or shed sons light on the scurces of higher levels of the ttiro
metals. Data is pri::.ariy iron the North Fork, ho::ev~er scale comparisons are
available from Stevens Gi1ch and t;innesota Creek. Data are shcw•n on Table 2.
Fe/TSS - R2tios of Fe:TSS (ug:mg) varied considerabl;, during the tfay to
October, 1975 period. ITiring the late l;ay to late June period TSS values ti:ere
relatively high (63-357 r~b~l) and Fe~TSS ratios were lox (0.2-G.9), ir~'ioatine a
relatively lov: contribution of the TSS po:-ticn to the total iron. A plot of these
data indicated no corn istent relatior~nip during th~s period.
Se ginning in late June, however, the Fe~TSS ratio increased sig:-.iSicant?,}•,
ranging Srov appra~cimately 3-155. Ruing this period TSS ccncentratiors kere
• relatively low (< 1-53 mg~l) and there xas some, though not conclusive, indication
of a relationship bett:een TS5 and iron.
There were no apparent differences between statiors for the Fe~TSS ratios in
the early period (;;ay-June), however there were some apparent differences in the
late June-0ctober period. Some ve r,; high ratios (in the order of 100) are not
considered si~ificant because oS the very low (one or less) TSS values involved.
Fe~TSS ratios in t•:iznesota Creek ranged Srom 8-52 (excluding TSS values oS 1
or less). TSS values were generally all low and no relationship between TSS and•
iron was Sound.
CO;~~Da_^15 o.-~s
No extensive data on Fe and TSS from the "forth Fork had been collected at
• prior periods, however, sore comparisons wit?: previous infor.:ation are possible.
Fe~TSS ratios cf the ::orth Fork Sor the period Ma}• to October fell into txo distinct
3-27
..,..
