Total Susncr,~ed Solics (TSS)
Results
• TSS sarplcs Here ta}:en appra~icately wee}~1y at stations in the l:orth Fort: and
F`irulesota Creek and weedy or as available in SteverLS Glil.ch.
Total suspended solids in the 7iorth F'orr, ranged from less than one to 357
mg~l duri7g the P:ay - Gctober, 1973 period. Dar:ng the same period TSS values in
the Q.~1ch ranged from less than one to 2150 mg~l.
All TSS values above 50 mg~l were fo•;nd during the I~ay, June a.^.d very early
July period, corresponding to sno+,nelt and sp.-ing rain runoff. TSS values after
early July were mostly low (25 mg~l or less) and Srequently between <1 and 10 mg~l.
Liaited data on June 14th and 16th shoca hia~er TSS levels ori~~ratiag in the
vicinity c: the r.:ine as cc~pared to the control area.
Cor..oarisons
• Previous data from 1•;arch and April, 1975 showed TSS ranges of 71 - 1130 mg~l
in the Ro"rh Fork a.-id ~2 - 100,000 mg~l in Stevens a.~1ch. TSS values obtained
during the present period were within the previous rage but corsiderably lower,
especially for Stev ~ens (k:].ch. Periods of high runoff from sno+.~melt accounted for
the very him levels fD•,u~d in the spring period.
Sitsificaace
?;orth For'r. data from 14ay -October do not indicate anv significant increase•
in turbidity from the nine area or the coal loadout area, based on the weekly
samples. Previous data indicate violations of state and federal standanis could
occur Srom the mine site, but the installation of sedimentation days in Y:estmorelanri
Ca~von should eliminate the major increases in sedimentation and provide compliance
+rith OS~`. regulations,
3~7
