Rick Sherman
Wildlife Biologist
Colorado Department
Division of Wildlife
2300 S. Townsend
Montrose, Colorado
of Natural Resources
81401
Re: Wildlife Information for Bear Coal Company
near Somerset, Colorado
Dear Mr. Sherman:
• Bear Coal Company has recently requested a permit revision to its
existing permit application the the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Division ("Division"). The revision will include a small tract of
land east of the town of Somerset and will involve the placement of
surface facilities to support the planned additional underground
mining in the "C" coal seam. All surface facilities will be removed
from the present Bear No. 1 and No. 2 portal areas, and the site will
be reclaimed to a wildlife habitat.
Mr, Allen Whitacker of the Colorado Division of Wildlife has been
contacted for input on potential impacts and recommendations on
reclamation techniques to enhance the wildlife habitat following
completion of mining; Mr. Whitacker suggested that we contact you
regarding your input and concerns. We have your letter of November
19, 1980 regarding impacts of mining. Any update concerning your
earlier recommendations would be welcomed. Attached for your
information is a wildlife form and a general location map.
