Railroad Facilities, Phippsburg through Oak Creek District
I was graciously provided access To a 1928 D&SL Timetable by M. L. Williams,
Jr., of Phippsburg, who also permitted me to copy D&RGW Timetable No. I of
Sunday, June 8, 1947 (the first Rio Grande timetable after merger with the Moffat).
A cursory comparison of the two shows general agreement on station locations, Track
capacities, etc. Most data below is from these timetables and THE MOFFAT ROAD
(Bollinger and Bauer 1962), with some information coming from TRACKING GHOST
RAILROADS IN COLORADO (Ormes 1975).
Information on the facilities existent in the late 1940s and rail operations in the
district were volunteered by railroaders Mark Williams, Leo Saindon, Paul Bonnifield,
Luke Wilson, and Newell Whaley. My thanks to all of them -- words can scarcely
convey what a pleasure it is to Talk with them. Additional information was provided
by Andrea White, Phippsburg Agent.
T.R.
Phippsburg
• Milepost 167.8. Elevation 7413. Phippsburg was the division point for the
DNW&P and later the D&SL. Facilities existed for car repair, locomotive servicing,
maintenance, and allied railroad functions. Telegraph operators were on duty 'round
the clock and handled Icl (less-than-car-load) freight, mail, and baggage.
Phippsburg was also astock-shipping point for sheep and cattle and served as the
loading area for the Seven Point Mine -- a wagon ramp lay at the west end of the
yard. The station also handled passenger traffic and was a full stop for the passenger
trains. In addition, it was a shipping area for spinach, lettuce, and dairy products.
Phippsburg was originally an old coal-mining camp, purchased at the site of the
Gray ranch. The Moffat Mine Company camp was moved to Phippsburg due to a
disagreement with the town of Oak Creek, which was owned by the Oak Creek Town
and Mining Company. There was some bitterness between The railroad and the
town -- they didn't even have a flag stop There for a couple of years after the
railroad was built through it!
Facilities included:
Station -- a small wooden frame station with facilities for crews, passengers,
agent, telegraph operator and other office personnel.
•
