x
• III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

February 20, 1978
Mr. James L. Schmieding
Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman Street, Room 723
Denver, Colorado 80203
VALCO, INC.
GENERAL OFFICES
P. O. BOX 550
ROCKY FORD, COLORADO 81067
(303) 254-7464
Dear Mr. Schmieding,
Re Valco, Inc. - Canon City East Pit - MLR File No. 77-559
Division of Water Resources Memorandum of February 9, 1978
On February 17 we received a copy of the subject memorandum.
We appreciate your forwarding it to us.
Living and working in the Arkansas Valley as we do at Valco,
we are aware of water problems in the Valley. 3fuch of our
product goes into concrete irrigation ditches and other water
facilities. In our operating area throughout the Valley we
continually attempt to conserve water and minimize the
effects of our operations on the hydrologic balance. We
feel that we are doing a good job in this respect.
Dr. Danielson's staff may have missed a few items in review-
ing our application. This is quite understandable in light
of the number of applications being processed at this time.
Our comments with respect to the items delineated in the
memorandum follow. They are numbered to conform to the para-
graph numbers in the memorandum.
1. We were not aware that "the applicant must calculate
the cone of depression created by dewatering in order'to
determine the potential effects of dewatering on nearby wells."
Our well in the plant site area (see map Exhibit C or map
Exhibit C-1) is the closest well and is not affected by the
amount of dewatering being done. As far as we know, it is the
only well anywhere near the pit. This mining operation has
been in progress since 1972. It seems likely that if any
well in the area was being affected, we would have been
advised by now.
2. We assume the DWR is referring to augmentation. We
do not believe they have considered the amount of open water
existing at the present time, the work Valco has done and
LAMAR CANON CITY PUEBLO
