NONTECHNICAL SOUS DESCRIPTION REPORT
weldrge
Map ~ Soil name atd description
gymbol
Av ~ Avalon sandy loam, 2 to 5 percent slopes
This unit is suited for irrigated hay and pasture.
Furror, drip, and sprinkler irrigation is suited to
this soil. Irrigation rater needs to be applied at a
rate that insures optimum production without increasing
deep percolation, runoff, and erosion. Use of pipe
reduces water loss end deep percolation. Tilth and
fertility can be improved by returning crop residue to
the snit and using a suitable rotation. Excessive
cultivation can result in the formation of a tillage
pan. This pan can be broken by subsoiling when the
soil is dry. Because of the undulating topography and
slope, onsi to investigations are needed before
leveling. Care should betaken in leveling designs to
avoid cuts into unsuitable soil material.
This unit consists of very deep, well drained soils on
intermediate valley terraces. These soils formed in
loess modified alluvium derived dominantly from mixed
shale and sandstone sources. The surface layer is
satdy loam about 3 inches thick. The upper 74 inches
of the subsoil are loam, and the loner 13 inches are
clay loam. The upper 12 inches of the substratum are
clay loam, end the loner part to a depth of more than
60 inches is gravelly loam. Permeability of this soil
is moderate. Available rater capacity is high.
Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff
is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is slight.
This unit is considered prime farmland.
Capability gubc lass 3E; irrigated; 7C; nonirrigated
