Statement before Mined Land Reclamatio4aard , April 22, 1982
My name is Dorothy Stauber of 505 S. 43rd Street in Boulder, Colorado .
I represent the Greater Majestic Heights Neighborhood Association Task
Force here today.
We have 3 areas of concern to bring to your attention.
1 . The first is , we request that the permit you issue require that
in the event no mining occurs beyond Stage 2, reclamation must
commence immediately and proceed with dispatch. We would like
to point out that Flatiron need not wait until the end of the
7-year period to apply to Boulder County for mining of the
additional stages . The company can apply during the 71 year so
that it will know before the end of the time period whether or
not it is planning for additional mining simultaneous with
reclamation, or only for reclamation.
2. Second , we request that the permit include a contingency provision
requiring adequate and environmentally-safe resolution of any
mosquito problem which may arise . We have no mosquito problem now.
• Any which develops would be a direct result of the reclamation.
We recognize that the Division of Wildlife respondent stated no
Oj nP j mosquito problems are known to have occurred from reclamation of
this nature . But we must point out that this mining operation is
ilk unusually close to highly populated areas . Therefore it is
appropriate to take prudent measures which preclude any outbreak
of mosquito-borne disease in these nearby neighboring residential
areas.
3. Third , we ask that ground cover in future areas to be mined, as
well as reclaimed areas , e n ante and/or maintained so as to
provide a green and dust-free surface during the normal growing
year. The need is to have dewatered areas only those in the
immediate vicinity of current mining to prevent loss of soil and
other surface material in the high winds which frequent our South
Boulder area.
Finally, we want this mining operation and its reclamation to be a
model for other areas which are faced with conflicts between living
space and development of natural resources . We believe that with
sensitivity by all the participants to the needs of each group , this
mining venture can be a good neighbor. We wish to commend the Mined
Land Reclamation Division staff for remarkable perception and
persistence in helping both the company and the residents find
solutions to their mutual concerns.
Thank you.
