Lang
Division Director
RE: Change in Design and Specification Chaagea to Iroa Clad
Tailings - Creation Project, Permit No. M-80-244
Dear Mr. Hardaway:
The Division of Minerals and Geology has received your request for
changes to specifications for the soil liner. The gradation
specification changes were reviewed by Mr. Allen Sorenson, of the
Division. The changes would allow placement of up to 10 percent
(10°s), by dry weight, of materials over 3/4 of an inch in size.
Since the soil liner fill will only be screened to 3 inches maximum
size, the contractor must remove, by hand, rocks that exceed 2
inches in size.
The Division has also reviewed the extensive geochemical analysis
report submitted which included results of detoxification using
calcium hypocholoride, acid base accounting, meteoric water
mobility tests and the total risk assessment using conservative
assumptions. The review was conducted by Dr. Harry Posey and
myself.
The Division is satisfied with the results and, at this time,
grants approval of the Iron Clad Tailings as soil liner. The
Division requests that all of the detoxification results be
submitted, when completed.
If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact me.
Sincerely,
tit ~~~'-~xQ~
Berhan Keffelew
Environmental Specialist
cc: Bruce Humphries
M:\oss\gaw\soJ
