TELLURIDE TIMES.IOURNgL <br />Telluride, CO <br />{San Miguel County) <br />Thu, 3,419 <br />COLORADO PRESS <br />Nucla ~y <br />open-pit <br />coal mine <br />dedicated <br />A giant open-pit mine directly <br />adjacent to Nucla's western town <br />boundaries was dedicated last <br />week. <br />Under conswction since Feb- <br />tvary, the New Horizon Mine's <br />coal will feed Nucla's tluidiud <br />coalbed power plant built by the <br />now-defunct Colorado-Ute Elec- <br />tric Association and inherited by <br />Tri-State Generation and Trans- <br />mission, the wholesale electric <br />supplier that tookover from Colo- <br />rado-Ute. <br />Tri-State has refurbished :he <br />experimental Nucla powcr plant, <br />_ and expects to begin generating <br />powei once agaui this summer. <br />The mine is expected to supply <br />betwcen 29,000 and 33,000 tons <br />of coal a month to the plant. <br />Nucla is one of about six coal- <br />fued power plants in the county <br />that uses limestone burned with <br />powdered coal to reduce sulfur- <br />dioxide emissions, making the <br />plant four times cleaner than tra- <br />ditional coal plants. <br />The approximately 25 jobs at <br />the mine are expected to provide a <br />major economiE.la~st for tn= ~" <br />pressed West End: <br />The mine currently has an air- <br />quality permit that must be fmal- <br />iudlater this year.
