Long
Division Director
Thank you for bringing to our attention your concerns regarding the Golden Eagle Coal Mine in
Las Animas County, Colorado. We received your letter on December 13, 1993 and wish to
provide this response.
Sections 5, 6, 7 and 8 of Township 33 South, Range 67 West do not currently lie within the
permit boundary of the Golden Eagle Mine. Section 17, however, does. As such, Lot 49C, as
shown on the Rancho Escondido Unit Four Map that you have provided us, is not within the
current Golden Eagle Mine permit boundary and is not approved to be undermined by Basin
Resources, Inc.
The majority of Lot 1-C, as shown on the Rancho Escondido Unit Three Map provided us,
appears to lie principally in Section 8, with portions of its southern extent in Section 17.
Lot 14-C in Unit Three appears to lie entirely within Section 17.
I placed a.telephone call today to Mr. Ralph Lopez, Environmental Engineer with Basin
Resources, Inc. I notified Mr. Lopez of your concerns, and sent him a copy of your letter via
facsimile transmission.
Mr. Lopez indicated to me that Section 17 is entirely within the currently approved Golden
Eagle Mine permit boundary, and that Basin Resources, Inc. anticipates undermining the north-
east quarter of Section 17 in approximately four years. Your Lot 14-C appears to lie in the east
half of the northeast quarter of Section 17 and is anticipated by the mining company to be
undermined.
Staff members from our Division have begun reviewing the permit documents for the Golden
Eagle Mine filed with our offices to determine what protection, if any, may be afforded to you
under our Law and Regulations. In conjunction with our review, we would appreciate you
providing us a description of any structures or improvements that currently exist in Lots 1-C
