Preliminary analysis of sites in reference to DMO status Rules.
Per Rule 1.1(14), definitions:
A) None of the sites uses chemicals in metallurgical processing.
B) Toxic forming materials maybe the main focus. The primary concern is the stockpiling of
ore on waste piles and the geo-chemical make up of the rock waste being deposited on
the surface. Contamination build up of surface materials from prolonged use of an area
may be an issue of concern. The long term and short-term exposure at the surface of ore
stockpiles needs to be reviewed. Waste rock analysis should identify if there is any
potential metals or natural toxins that need to be addressed.
C) No discharges from the mines or waste piles have historically been observed. Water and
rock sampling should identify any potential for acid mine drainage.
D) If a DMO designation is warranted all sites are in the 110d definition.
E) The focus of the review is to determine the potential for AMD or other contamination
risks.
Staff through separate correspondence will make a formal request from Cotter for water, sample .
data and a composite sample of waste rock along with other noted issues. after engineering and
supervisory review. It will also+be noted that DMG staff will review the information, gathe[ed in
.cone with the sampling in its preliminary assessment of the DMO issue. _, , ,. .
Russ Mean~~
EPS II
Grand Junction Field Office
Enclosures: 3/24/05 inspection reports for the above referenced sites
