LOCAL DATA <br />Delta, with a population of approximately 4,500 inelde the city llmite and a <br />satellite population of more then 8,000 Le the county seat of Delta County. <br />Named for the wedge of alluvial land where the Uncompahgre and Cunnieon Rivera <br />meet, it was nettled in 1BB1 in the aftermath of the departing Ute Indiana. <br />At an altitude of 4,951 feet Lt has a mild dry climate with temperatures <br />seldom ranging above 100 degrees or below zero, with the annual precipitation <br />of about eight inches. Approximately 18,000 care a day have been counted on <br />the various hlghwaye that intersect at Delta. . <br />A variety of accommodatlone are available within the town and retail end <br />professional services abound. water la provided by the Tri-County water end <br />sewer service ie provided by the town. Delta Montrose Electric Aeeociation <br />provides electricity with a town back up unit and telephone service Se <br />provided by U. 5. We et. Police protection and street maintenance are <br />provided by the town and a volunteer fire dietrlcte provide protection to the <br />town and outlying area. Numerous recreational areas are available to the <br />public including the Cleland Pool end the Confluence Park and a number of <br />smaller parka and playing fields. Colorado state park and Sweitzer Lake nre <br />located just South of Delta. <br />Hotchkiss, with a population of approximately 740 Se located on Highway 92 <br />and 177, approximately 30 miles Eaet of Delta. Highway 177 continues <br />North/East to the Town of Paonia and the scenic mountain paeeee of Kebler and <br />McClure. Highway 92 continues South to the Town of Crawford and the access to <br />the North rim of the Black Canyon and the Black Meea. The North Fork of the <br />Cunnieon River flows through the Western part of town. <br />Hotchkiss provides water and sewer service and police protection to the town <br />and a volunteer fire department ie located in the town. The town ie managed <br />by a mayor, city council government with no zoning restrictions within the <br />town. Hotchkiss, a rural crossroads in a farm and ranch community provides <br />eervlcee and retail busLneee to the local community and tourlete and hunters. <br />Crawford, with an elevation of 6,860 feet and an official population of 261 le <br />a rural ranching town for the settlements of Maher, Crystal Creek and Smith <br />Fork, in this primarily ranching area of cattle and sheep. The main street le <br />Highway 92 which connects Crawford with Hotchkiss to the North and continues <br />on to the Crawford Reeervolr and the north rim of the Black Canyon and Black <br />Meea to the South, <br />Paonia, In the North Fork of the Cunnieon River, and locally called the North <br />Fork, at an altitude of over 5,000 feet above sea level, ie one of the largest <br />fruit producers in Colorado. Paved roads connect Paonia with U.S. Highway 50 <br />and provides access to some of the moat spectacular mountain scenery via aleck <br />Meea to Gunnleon~ Kebler Paea, an alternate route to Cunnieon and Created <br />Butte Skiing Areaj and McClure Pees to Glenwood Springs, I-70 and Aspen. <br />There are three producing coal mines In the North Fork area, and although the <br />mines experienced reduction in work force in the 1980'e, new retrofitting with <br />long wall mining has again provided jobs for more miners. At the present time <br />over 5 treinloede of 100 care carrying 100 tone of coal each are leaving Delta <br />County dally. <br />There are a number oC commercial and retell bueineee within the area including <br />the USFS Ranger office,and the Deltn County Telecommunicatlone office.. <br />
