Richartl D. Lemm
Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DI\
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
April 17, 1984
Mr. Scott Jones
Snowmass Coal Company
P.O. Box 980
Carbondale, Colorado 81623
Re: Stipulations and Commitments to N. Thompson Creek Mine, Permit No.
C-025-81
Dear Mr. Jones:
The Division has completed its review of your response to Stipulation No. 1,
your subsidence report format, as built designs, Canadian Thistle control
plan, and quarterly hydrologic monitoring results. The following are the
results of our review:
Stipuiation No. 1 of the N. Thompson Creek Permit reads as follows:
Stipulation No. 1
WITHIN ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY (120) DAYS OF PERMIT ISSUANCE, SNOWMASS
COAL COMPANY SHALL INSTALL ADDITIONAL MONITORING WELLS TO MONITOR THE
UPPER SANDSTONE OF THE WILLIAMS FORK FORMATION. THESE MONITORING WELLS
MAY BE DRILLED WITHIN THE N0. 3 MINE TO REDUCE DRILLING COSTS. ALL
MONITORING WELLS SHALL BE: 1) PROPERLY SCREENED WITHIN THE ENTIRE
SANDSTONE UNIT, AND 2) PROPERLY SEALED AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM TO PREVENT
THEIR DESTRUCTION. THE SPACING OF THE ADDITIONAL MONITORING WELLS SHALL
BE SUBMITTED TO THE DIVISION FOR APPROVAL 60 DAYS FOLLOWING ISSUANCE OF
THIS PERMIT.
The Division reviewed the new piezometric map developed from the new well
data. The map format was good. I liked the idea of superimposing the
topography over the mine workings. The map verifies your earlier prediction
of a near linear piezometric contour between wells PZ-l, 3, 2, and 4.
Accordingly, Stipulation No. 1 is hereby resolved and the new piezometric map
satisfied your commitment made in the application.
Jim Pendelton of our staff reviewed your subsidence report format. He has
recommended approval of the report format under the condition that a
subsidence map accompany the report submittal. Unless you disagree with this
condition the Division considers this item resolved.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (30'x) 866-3567
9
