Box 199 :'w]' -
San Luis, Colorado 81152 "~"''~~ c
- 9AA1iLE MOIJNiAIN
GOLD COMPANY
Dear Mr. Albert:
The following is a summary of the actions taken aft;er the
discovery of bats in leach tank #8 on August 26, 1992.
At approximately 7:00 a.m., the mill crew discoverE~d bats on
the inside wall of leach tank #8 and began removincr the bats
from the tank. A total of 64 bats were pulled from the tank
walls and/or dipped from the slurry. The bats werE~
individually washed in warm water and placed in buckets to
dry. Five of the 64 bats died. The dead bats werE~'
immediately placed in a plastic ziplock bag and stored in a
freezer. Mr. Conrad Albert of the Colorado Division of
Wildlife was contacted, and the situation was described to
him over the telephone. At approximately 2:30 p.m., 59 bats
were relocated to the south wall of the East Pit. Several
bats immediately flew from the area; the other bat: crawled
on the rock ledge. Mr. Albert visited the site later that
afternoon. He viewed the leach tank area where the bats
were discovered and the south wall of the East Pit where the
bats were relocated. At the time of Mr. Albert's visit,
only 12 to 15 bats remained on the rock ledge; the other
bats had flown a3aay from the point of relocation.
Mr. Albert identified the bats as little, brown bats.
He took three of the frozen bats with him for species
verification and possible lab work by Wildlife's hebitat
biologists.
For the construction of the INCO S02 circuit, a Licht pole
on the southeast corner of the leach deck was tempcrarily
removed a few days prior to the arrival of the bat;. The
change in lighting near leach tank #8 may have attracted the
bats. The light pole will be replaced.
The bats have not returned.
Thank you for your time. If you have any questions, please
contact me.
Sincerely,
~~ ~ ~ ~
Alana L.
