Climate
At the Canadian Strip Mine the climate is characterized as semi-arid with cool summers,
cold winters, low precipitation and a short growing season. Average annual precipitation
is 10 inches, with half occurring as snowfall in amounts averaging 51 inches per year. Winds
are generally from the west that produces a rain shadow effect and dry conditions at the
location of the mine relative to the mountain range to the west. The growing season is short
with an average annual frost-free period of 40 days.
Climatological data and information on air resources can be found in Appendix D of
Volume II and Appendices H and O of Volume III of the permit renewal application.
Fish and Wildlife
The permit and adjacent areas are included within areas of high quality wildlife habitat.
The major uses of the area by wildlife include antelope fawning, mule deer winter range,
mule deer migration route, and sage grouse mating, nesting and winter habitat.
Information regarding fish and wildlife is found in Appendix G of Volume II of the original
permit application.
Cultural and Historic Resources
Several cultural resource inventories have been conducted on lands included within the
Canadian Strip Mine permit area. A study by Pioneer Archaeological Consultants identified
previously unknown sites also noting the presence of sites recorded by a previous survey.
Two sites were located near an existing haul road (BLM right-of-way). Both sites have been
previously protected by stipulated avoidance.
The second survey, by Gordon and ICranzush, Inc. in 1980 and 1981, identified new sites,
but, none of the newly recorded finds were recommended as eligible for nomination to the
National Register of Historic Places. These sites have not been disturbed by past mining
and will not be disturbed in the future because this mine is in permanent reclamation.
Information on cultural and historic resources can be found in Section 2.04.4 and Appendix
B of Volume I of the original permit application.
Canadian Strip Mine, C-81-026 9 July 31, 1992
