•
_-•
MINING AND RECLAMATION PLAN
MT. GUNNISON NO. 1 MINE

October, 1979
Revised March, 1981
Revised January 25, 1982
Revised February 4, 1982
At the present time, only two wells are located in the "F" seam, Wells C-76 and 23-
H-3. This data is not sufficient to make a piezometric map or establish a direction
of groundwater movement for the "F" coal seam. Well completion and location
data can be found in Exhibit 2.8.2. A.1 and Exhibit 2.8.I.C.
•
Groundwater samples have been obtained from nine wells by bailing. Two other
wells, 23-H-2 and B-16, were found to be either dry or to have water levels too low
to collect samples. The results of the water quality analyses are tabulated in Table
2.8.2.V. Incomplete information was obtained on well B-27-2 due to the well being
bailed dry prior to all the samples being obtained. Water quality in the wells varied
significantly from good to poor. Every well exceeded the recommended Colorado
Water Quality Standards for ammonia. Boron, lead, and manganese standards were
exceeded by several of the wells. Copper and fluoride limits were exceeded in two
of the wells (see Table 2.8.2.W). A comparison of the well water quality analyses
to the water quality standards recommended by the State of Colorado has been
performed and the information presented in Table 2.8.2.W.
Water quality samples taken in 1975 from two locations in the Bear Mine (Table
2.8.2. V) showed marked variations from other groundwater samples in some
constituents. Typically high values of alkalinity and sulfates and low values of
hardness that were measured from several other groundwater samples were also
found in these samples. However, high chloride values were found in the Bear Mine
samples. No other groundwater samples exhibited a high chloride level. Even with
elevated chloride levels, this water exhibits no acidity and is suitable for direct
discharge without treatment.
2.8.2.3. Current Drilling Programs
To further define and quantify the overburden groundwater regime on the Mt.
Gunnison No. 1 Mine site, a new drilling program is currently being undertaken.
•
2-303b
-- - - r
