Cattany
Acting Division Director
Included with this fax are some pages that I pasted together from a number of sources
describing cement chemistry and concrete mixing as it relates to sulfate resistance. The
Executive Summary is that the cement ingredient susceptible to sulfate attack is
tricalcium aluminate. Type V cement specification is described in ASTM C150-02, which
limits the allowable percentage of tricalcium aluminate in the cement. Sulfate resistance
of concrete is further enhanced by using a low water/concrete ratio and by adding
pozzolan to the mix to reduce porosity and permeability of the concrete.
Thanks for the San Juan County update yesterday; let me know if DMG can do anything
to facilitate progress in the Animas Basin.
-Allen
DATE: 8!16/02 NUMBER OF PAGES TO FOLLOW:
PROGRAM: MINS.
