Box 1067
Rangely, Colorado 81648-1067
Dear Mr. Chervick:
RFCEIVFit
APR 91993
DIV15iDii v. rmire~ms c, a~uioBY
Thank you for your recent telephone to Mr. Sells regarding the dinosaur tracks
that were found in the Deserado Hine. As you may know, dinosaurs, and just
about everything about dinosaurs, are of extreme popular and scientific
interest at the present time. We truly appreciate the opportunity being
offered by Western Fuels to examine the tracks in the Deeerado Hine. It ie
our hope to be able to examine the tracks, and any associated trackwaye with
the least possible disruption of mining operation. In addition, we want to be
sure that examination of the tracks be done as safely as possible. We
certainly do not want anyone getting hurt.
In answer to your question about various pieces of legislation that refer to
fcaeils, `!r. Sells has taken two pages from the Colorado 3urea~ of Land
Management Supplemental Manual 8270. The pages list the various laws that
have passages pertaining to fossils or other objects of "Scientific Interest"
There are also some portions of the Code of Federal Regulations that could be
referenced here, but they are some what complex, and in some cases obscure,
and which part of the regulations ie important depends upon a number of
variables such as what type of fossils are involved, where were they found,
what were the circumstances, and eo on.
The Bureav has chosen to not take a heavy handed approach to the management of
fossil resources where ever possible and rely on the "Honor System" instead.
We would like to commend and thank Western Fuels for sharing their discovery
with us and allowing us the opportunity to examine and evaluate the tracks.
Thank you very much, again, for sharing your find with us.
Sincerely,
~' ~G~"~~GG~'
B.
