~. iii iiiiiiiiiiiu iii
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Davitl H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DI1
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
T0: Randy Price
FROM: Jim Pendleton
RE: "Inspection
MEMORANDUM
\i4 May 1986
/) _ n
1 1986 Landsliding, Bear Mine No. 3"
I have reviewed the short inspection report
regarding the landsliding which occurred at
was prepared by Ken Myers, P.E., consultant
prepared most of the engineered designs and
within the Bear No. 3 Mine permit documents
access road.
submitted by Bear Mining Company,
the Bear No. 3 Mine. This report
to the operator. Mr. Myers has
stability analyses contained
relating to the portal bench and
Mr. Myers observations are compatible with those expressed within my
inspection report of May 7, 1986. Mr. Myers quantifies the locations and
quantities of materials involved in the slides. He observes that the majority
of the landsliding was not caused by mining activity at the site. Landsliding
is relatively epidemic within the North Fork Valley this spring.
Mr. Myers observes that "design alternatives for dealing with the problem may
be developed during the next month and implemented during the relatively dry
'window' in late May and June. Mr. Myers briefly discusses several design and
treatment alternatives within the report.
As I stated in my inspection report, the operator should prepare and submit a
plan for resolution of the stability problems no later than May 31, 1986. I
realize that ~ choice of wording may be confusing. My intention was to
require the operator to submit a schedule for the completion of a remedial
design and construction activities by that date. I believe the operator
should be able to complete remedial treatments prior to the end this fall's
construction season, However, remedial treatment cannot commence until the
materials have dried sufficiently to stabilize.
cc: Bob Liddle
JP/jP
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
