I am assuming that the old Edwards Mine had
two portals, one for the B-Seam and one for the C-Seam.
The Bear No. 3 Mine entered at the C-Seam and ramped down to the B-Seam. The Bear No. 3 adit location is shown at
the west end (west is to the right) of their portal access road. The adit and road have been reclaimed. I, therefore, assume
that that is the approximate elevation of the C-Seam. That elevation also coincides with the dark colored (coal ?) outcrop
at the base of the cliff. 1 believe that the exposed steel beams that I saw at the top of the slide could be part of an Edwards
Mine C-Seam portal.
I have a mine map that states that the B-Seam is located about 40 to 70 feet below the C-Seam, so I drew in a very
approximate B-Seam outcrop. I believe that the Edwards Mine B-Seam portal is approximately where 1 marked it.
I am going out into the field this coming week so I can check with the Bear brothers as to the accuracy of my assumptions
and diagram. Thanks!
Locations
Diagram.jpg
-----Original Message-----
From: Renner, Steve
Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 2:06 PM
To: Dudash, Jce
Cc: McArdle, Jim
Subject: RE: Bear No. 3 Coal Fire?
Joe -can you somehow describe on the photo:
-Where the C and B seams crop;
- Where the seperation is betweenthe Edwards and Bear Mines are;
- About where the new vent is located
Thanks
Steve
-----Original Message-----
From: Dudash, Jce
Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 1:21 PM
To: Renner, Steve
Cc: Brown, Sandy; Bucknam, David; McArdle, lim
Subject: Bear No. 3 Coal Fire?
Sandy requested that I let you know of a certain situation at the Bear No. 3 Mine. On
Thursday, October 23, Sandy had a conversation with Kathy Welt at Oxbow. As you know,
Kathy's office is directly across the river and highway from the Bear No. 3 Mine in Somerset.
Kathy said that she has observed in the past that the C coal seam was burning and that the B
coal seam recently was smoldering at the Bear No. 3 Mine. Kathy also said that there is a
large vent on the east side of the mine site.
There has been an ongoing slide just to the west of the Bear No. 3 Mine disturbed area.
Occasionally, during an inspection when I walked near the top of the slide area, I could detect
the smell of smoldering coal. During cold weather, I might even see a little trail of steam or
