7/24/98 Interoffice Memo
The local people of Las Animas county, the people of Colorado, and for that matter,
any other visitors to this property have Basin Resources to thank for the opportunity
to enjoy the unique values of this land into perpetuity. Elk and turkeys frequent the
reclaimed areas of the property. Other mammals such as deer, beaver, coyote, and
fox also traverse these areas. Bear have been sighted frequently in the area and
mountain lion occasionally leave tracks across the reclaimed site. While the
reclaimed area is not large, it's proximity to the Purgatoire River, Ciruela and Apache
Canyons, and irrigated pasture areas make it highly desirable for use by wildlife.
I recommend we pass the application on to the OSM with our recommendation that
Basin be considered for the National Award as well as the Best-of-the-Best Award.
The application must be forwarded to the OSM field office no later than February 1,
1999. I assume the OSM has an individual responsible to review and handle these
applications. Let me know if I need do anything more.
KAG
~rz4rea z
