iii iii~iii~iiiuiii
999
~~
~~~
~~~~
San Luis Proiect News
Summer/Fall 1990 Information on the San Luis Project, Castilla County, Colorado
PLANT CONSTRUCTION,
EQUIPMENT ACQUISITION IN FULL SWING
Battle Mountain Gold has begun
construction in earnest on the processing
plant and spent ore management facilities
for the San Luis Project. Battle Mountain
expects the plant to be up and running in
early 1991.
"It's all happening at once," said Gary
Dodson, operations manager of the San Luis
Project."We'llhaveabout ISOpersonsonsite
daily through November
or December. Startup is
scheduled for January."
Work on the pro-
cessing plant building it-
self isbeing headed up by
The Industrial Company
(TIC) of Steamboat
Springs, Colorado. TIC,
which maintains an of-
fice in San Luis, mobi-
lized its forces in late
May. The on-site work
force of about 79 persons
includes about 50 local
personnel.
So far, most of the
concrete foundations for
the processing plant have
been poured. Installation
of mechanical systems
began in August. The
tanks used in the gold ex-
traction process are al-
most complete.
Personnel from
Minproc, an engineering
firnt with offices in Den-
ver, are on site handling
quality assurance and
quality control on con-
struction of the process-
ingplant.
The processing plant building will
enclose the mill and pump areas. The
refinery will be built as an addition to the
main structure. Processing tanks also will
be pan of a single, compact complex.
The plant's milling azea will house two
primary units, a 3,000 horsepower SAG mill
and a 2,500 horsepower ball mill. SAG
stands for "semi-autogenous grinding," a
process in which much of the work of
grinding down large lumps of ore is done by
tumbling the m against each other.
Here is a rundown on other parts of the
construction process which are either under
way or about to begin at the San Luis
Project site or its ancillary facilities:
• At the end of September, the water
pipeline to the plant site from Battle
Mountain's water supply on the Columbian
ranch was 99 percent completed.
The pipeline was delivered in late
August. In all, Battle Mountain will install
about 10 miles of pipeline to carry water to
the San Luis Project from the ranch. TIC
will be responsible for welding the pipeline.
Having the pipeline in place will cut
down on track traffic which has been gener-
ated hauling wafer to the project site. Water
carried to the site by pipet ine will be available
only for dust control and
soil compaction work un-
til BattieMountain obtains
final approval from the
Colorado water courts to
use its water supply for
mining and milling.
• Battle Mountain Gold
has taken delivery virtually
every day during August
on pieces of equipment
which will be installed in
the processing plant itself.
• Construction has be-
gun on the facilities for
management of spent ore.
This part of the project is
being handled by Twin
Mountain Rock, aDenver-
based, civil works con-
tractor.
Another contractor,
Gundle Corp., is begi nning
tolayounhesynthetic1iner
which will underlay the
spent ore management
area. The Liner will be in-
stalled over a compacted
foundation prepared by
Twin Mountain Rock.
Also on site is Steffen
Robertson Kirsten
(SRK), an engineering Finn with offices in
Denver. SRK i:. conducting the quality
assurance and quality control program on
conswction of the spent ore management
facility.
