I
.~
P.O. Box 1365, Boulder, Colorado 80306 (303) 442-3120
January 26, 19s~ JAN 281981
Mr. Jim McArdle MINED LAND
Division of Mine Land Reclamation RFr~ °MATIDN~I~/IS~QN
1313 Sheermen Street - -- -_
Denver, Colorado 80203 ~i,• ttj
Dear Jim: 1~•~'ZO~
M'
As per our phone conversation this morning, the following is a description
of the activity of the cement plant north of my home, near Lyons, Colorado.
We have lived in the .home (10810 North 49th Street, Longmont, Colorado) for
five years. We are approximately 1'~ miles south of the cement plant, formally op-
erated by Martin Marietta. Last year, after the switch in ownership of the plant,
we noticed some changes in their activity.
Explosions are more frequent than they had been, but that is not our problem.
At issue is the intensity of the blasts. Approximately, in mid January two explosions
rocked our home, with the ground shaking for over half a minute. (We are 1~ miles
away!) We can not be sure of the frequency of these intense blasts, as we are not
always at home.
A second concern is the population of Bald Eagles wintering very close to this
plant. At the blast last week, my husband witnessed the eagles (nine at the time)
being blasted out of two trees about '~ mile south of the plant. This population of
eagles has increased every winter since we have been observing them. This kind of
activity is obviously detrimental to these birds.
Our third and last concern is the apparent increase in night time activity of
the plant. I realize that this may be out of your jurisdiction, but I think it is
important for the record. Night time noise and smoke exhaust has increased drama-
tically. The noise in the past was inaudible but now it seems to roar some nights
between 11:00 and 6:00 a.m.
I appreciate any response and feedback on this matter. Enclosed please find
a sketch of our neighborhood.
Si cerely,
/cy A. Da~~
10810 North 49th Street
Longmont, Colorado

Moving and Storage Since 1912
