N III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ~
Mount, Carl
From: Ken.Brakken@rfets.gov
Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 1999 11:14 AM
To; carl.mount@state.co.us
Cc: Steve.Schiesswohl@rfets.gov; John.Rampe@rfets.gov; Sean.Bell@rfets.gov;
Mike.Erickson@rtets.gov; stephen.nesta@rtets.gov; CIiff.Franklin@rfets.gov;
Joe.Legare@rfets.gov
Subject: Telelphone Call Record
Carl:
Steve Schiesswohl is out of the office; he asked me to call you to follow
up on several items discussed in our meeting with Mr. McKay on the Lakewood
Brick and Tile mine in Section 9 of the RFETS Buffer Zone.
In that meeting, we discussed:
That if materials were brought from off site into the RFETS Buffer Zone
and placed on the mine site, that the mine operator would evaluate the
potential quality of this material as reclamation material, a soil
additive, before recommending that the material be brought onto the mine
site;
That if the material is approved to be brought onto the mine site as
reclamation material, that the material be segregated (fine materials
placed with fine materials, course materials placed in piles with coarse
materials, high-quality reclamation materials segregated from
lower-quality reclamation materials) in marked reclamation material
stockpiles on the mine site;
That a map be submitted and included in the mine plan showing where the
reclamation material stockpiles would be located, the height and general
shape (e.g., rectangular, non-rectangular, semi-circular, etc.) of each
pile, and the planned (estimated) cubic yards of material to be placed
in each stockpile;
That a plan to revegetate the piles be submitted (both to control
wind-blown material and to control noxious weeds);
That the mine plan describe where and how this material will be used in
the future reclamation of the mine (recognizing that said reclamation
will be in the future, and the description of use may be general at this
time); and
That this information be submitted by the mine operator to the Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Division, reviewed, approved and added to the
mine plan for that mine.
In our telephone conversation, you recommended that we, the US Department
of Energy, work directly with the mine operator and that the mine operator
submit a technical revision to the mine plan to the Mined Land Reclamation
Division. You noted that you would be recalculating the reclamation bond
for this mine.
Ken Brakken, July 21, 1999, 10:23 AM
