Dear San Luis Valley Fesidents,
l"his is one of those "I told you so lel"tc--rs". As Eattle hlrn.-intain
G01cJ Co. Continues to destroy the Rico Seco lJatershed and now
they volunteer to shut themselves dawn far leaving mayor cyanide
concentrations in their tailings ponds, this is all bc-ginning tv
hecarne the reality of a nightmare. As recently as a fea, months
ay0, I rerne~T,L-er- telling a few residents that BMG was going to
cr-eate irreparable damage to our local water supply and
environment, wel.1 it 10o4~s li}:e I was right. RMG ou_ of the
goodness of their heart has voluntarily closed the milling
facilities because or' a faulty design that has created a
dangerou=_ly high cyanide concentration in their por~cl=_.. I can
still recall the sm0atl-~ tal4;iny e;:pe!-ts telling us i:hat this
milling facility was the "State of the Ar-t" facility and nothing
Gould go wrong. Again "I told you so". 13MG's "State of The Art"
facility is starting to 1004:: 1i4::e another minir~y CGmpany'S "Seat
of the Pants" design that cause mass destruction to local
watersheds and comarunities. Remember Summitville: they did
everything to 4::eep themselves open at the e;:pense of the now dead
AlamOSa river and Terrace reservoir. The scary part ~f the BhIG
lRito Seco traged•/ is the worst is yet to come. As I've said
hefore, cyanide is a=_ually the short term problem. Tlie real
problem occurs wi-~en 1-.he heavy metals mitigate and c-rasienhaind
and moisture) ta4;e over. blhen do we say no to these Boom or b~_~st
industr-ies^ The days of the manifest destiny are over RMG. I'r.
sure you don`t mean t0 screw -up, you just do.
Residents of the Valley, we plead with you. Help u.s get this
venomous serpent out of o~_ir hac4<yard. Come to San Luis and ].ao4:
at the Rattle Mountain scar. Y'ou 6e the ~udye. Nq war can they
reclaim the land, and common sense will tell yrou this. Let a=_
learn from Summitville, C!uesi_a, Leadville, Etc..., that mines ar-e
pollute=rs and the•~ must be controlled.
Si ncerel y~,
~.~ //AGE
Jae Gallegos
F~res. Committee for Environ~ner~tal Soundness
