Cattany
Division DIRYIOf
Natu21 Resoure Trus[ee
The Coal Program of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) has been
informed by the Mine Safety and Training Program of the same Division that surface blasting at
the Bowie No. 2 Mine has been suspended until Colorado blaster certifications have been
acquired by the appropriate Bowie Resources LLC (BRL) personnel. Further, through a
telephone conversation with staff at the Bowie No. 2 Mine, the Coal Program understands that
there has not been any surface blasting associated with operations at the Bowie No. 2 Mine in the
last two years.
The Coal Program wants to use this opportunity to remind BRL of its regulatory obligations
concerning surface blasting at the Bowie No. 2 Mine. The specific requirements for the use of
explosives for surface blasting aze contained in Rule 4.08, while Rule 6 has the requirements for
blaster training and certification. In addition, Rule 2.05.3 details the requirements for surface
blasting of overburden. Please review these requirements with the appropriate personnel at the
Bowie No. 2 Mine and update the Bowie No. 2 Mine permit application, if needed.
If you have any questions, please call me.
Sincerely,
sep J. dash
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Jim Stover P.E.
