~iu~~, w~o~- III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
I~AYi1ilIViJ
~i~*leftds Mine: 1992 Sampling Plan
The following sampling scheme will be employed during
May and June, 1992 at the proposed new Lillylands areas.
These areas will be sampled for baseline vegetation data as
part of identifying communities that will be disturbed and
locating reference areas that will be used in assessing
reclamation success. The techniques listed below are
congruent with the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Division's "Guidelines for Compliance with Land Use and
Vegetation Requirements of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board for Coal Mining, October, 1988"
("Vegetation Guidelines").
Threatened and Endangered Species:
Prior to visiting the site, the Colorado Natural Areas
Program will be notified for information regarding
threatened or endangered plant species that are known to
exist or may exist on the proposed permit area and adjacent
areas. As part of 1991 baseline data collection, special
attention was given to the possible existence of Payson
lupine (Lupinus crassus) which has been previously
identified in the vicinity of Naturita. During
reconnaissance in May and sampling in June, the site and
adjacent areas will be searched for Payson lupine and other
threatened and endangered plant species. Prior to the main
portion of field work, specimens of species believed to be
in the general area will be reviewed at the University of
Colorado herbarium. The Division will be notified of the
location of any such species should they be encountered.
Number of Communities:
Vegetation communities (delineated on the basis of
existing, visually dominant perennial species) will be
identified for the entire permit area and for adjacent areas
within approximately one half mile of the permit boundary.
Major communities existing within the permit area will be
sampled and quantitatively described. Minor communities
(those comprising less than 10 acres) will be qualitatively
described. Reference areas will be selected and sampled for
all the major communities that the area will be reclaimed
to. in 1991, a reference area was not established for the
juniper-pinyon pine community as it was not the operator's
intent to reestablish the community. This was approved by
the Division and the surface owner and may again be the case
this year. The locations of all identified communities and
reference areas will be marked on an appopropriate map or
aerial photograph.
