Reclamation of the Staley Gordon/East Portal Area:
Ecological description of site
Average annual precipitation: 10" -Most precipitation occurring in the spring
and fall.
Precipitation this season: 6.27" from November through August.
Extremely dry spring with only 0.67" received
from April through June (2.85" typical).
Aspect: The site has a southerly aspect.
Elevation: 5400'
Soils: Thin, weakly developed soils. Texture
primarily clayey to loamy clay. No topsoil was
available for salvage from site. 4" of topsoil
was hauled in from the Deserado Mine.
Dominant vegetation: Similar adjacent sites dominated by black
greasewood, big sagebrush, and cheatgrass.
Distance from drainage: Site located within 100' of major ephemeral
drainage.
Extenuating circumstances: Site is located immediately below extremely
steep and long slopes. Horizontal lengths are
typically from 400 to 600 feet. Slopes are
typically 1.4h:1v to 1.8h:1v. Bedrock is
exposed over much of this surface. Due to the
configuration of the site, little can be done to
divert runoff from these slopes away from the
reclamation area.
Post mine land use: Livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.
Blue Mountain Energy, Inc. 2 Staley Gordon/East Portal Area
