::
-2-
The transition areas should be no steeper than 8% in grade, with a minimum 15 ft.
bottom width and 2H:1 V sideslopes. Total channel depth should be about 2 feet.
Riprap should be as follows:
Dm,,, = 0.9 ft.
D5° = 0.75 ft.
D,° = 0.25 ft.
Riprap must be well graded, angular in shape, and of excellent durability. The
installation must be keyed in at top and bottom. It will also be necessary to install
a filter layer of approximately 1 /2" to 2" gravel, approximately 10 to 12 inches
deep beneath the riprap. Total channel dimensions given above are those
dimensions at the rock surface. The riprap must be installed over the entire
channel cross section. All junctions must be orooerly keved.
The channel between the upper and lower junction areas should be about 20 feet
wide, minimum sideslopes of 2H:1 V with a channel gradient of about 2%. Total
depth here should be about 2 feet. With these dimensions, a velocity of about 6
feet per second will theoretically result (Manning used .0351. Some erosion may
occur, thus emphasizing the need for proper transition/key in work. If finances
permit, you may want to riprap this interim section as well.
I know that your survey effort was just as rushed as my calculations. Given the
apparent paucity of information, I hope that these designs prove successful. I
think that we have done the best we possibly can.
m:\oss\scm\berry.mmo
y~~I~~~SS /~
~o~~ f~~r°~ - I" 5~~ ~~v..~- IBS i"~
