Costilla County, Colorado SAN LUIS PROJECT UPDATE Building Construction Nearing Completion Building construction has been moving ahead at the San Luis Project. We have Focused on building construction this loll and nn into the winter. But we also have been active in reclamation, soil conservation, and preparing to stuff our mining operation over the next I X months. Here are some of the details. Buildings. In late summer. Battle Mountain Gold contracted with TIC, z Colorado contractor to build three buildings at the plain site, and TIC has been making good progress. The buildings are the combination maintenance shop and warehouse. the office and the lab. TIC has put up the structural steel rm all three buildings. The "skin." or outer wall covering, is complete on the office and un the lab and is (r$ percent complete on the shop-warehouse building. The office and lab are being drv-walled inside. while the .kin is being linished on the shop. Durim_ the past several weeks, the contractor has had 20 to IS employees on the sits. including several local residents. Soil Conservation. Erosion of the county road by the Rito Seco Creek has been around since long betitre Battle Mountain came to this area. However. our work here is giving us the opportunity to help rontrul the pnthlem. In ruuperation with the Soil Conser- vation Sen~ice (SCSI, we have identified nine contort channels that cross the roomy road. The SCS has surveyed them and cal- culated the proper sites for culverts. and Bartle Mountain will bur the cul+erts and hire a rnntractor to install them. Culverts will :dluw ,trcam flow's to pass under instead oFcutting into the road. We will in>tall riprap m;uerial at the culvert discharge w slow the water velocity. This will slow down erosion and protect water quality in the creek. Personnel Development. Battle Mountain plats to employ up to 90 persons withit the next 18 momhs, and we are cooperutine with two local oreaniza- tions to make sure that Costilla County residents are yell represented. We have established standards which job seekers must meet to be considered for employment ;tt the San Luis Project. The standards emphasize eighth-grade level skills in math and English. In addition, Battle Mount.tin has a random drug screening pro:ess in place which applies to current and future employees.
