L. O'Connor, Superintendent, Edwards <br />Mine, Clark Coal Company, Somerset, Colorado at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, July <br />6, 1958 in the "B" coal bed. There was no one in the mine at that time. <br />Mr. O'Connor notified J. J. Roddy, District State Inppector at Grand <br />Junction, about 10:30 p.m, the same day. The Bureau of Mines was notified <br />of the fire by Tea A21en, Chief State Inspector about 9 p.m. Monday, July <br />7, 1958 and the writer was instructed that evening to go to the mine the <br />next day. <br />Upon discovering the fire by detecting odor at the main fan <br />Mr. O'Connor explored the main drift in the ''B" coal .bad but could not <br />locate the fire. He called Luther Baughman, Foreman and Fire Boss about <br />9:50 p.m. and they explored 1 aad 2 left off 2 raise where they encountered <br />smoke but did not see any flames. There was considerable loose coal that <br />had apalled from the ribs and the floor had heaved excessively.in this <br />section of the mine. Because of these conditions this portion of the mine <br />could not be ventilated effectively, <br />The State District Coal Mine Inspector arrived at the mine at <br />7:30 a.m. on July 7, and erection of the sea la was started about 1:30 <br />p.m. the same day. Tha writer arrived at the mine at 11:30 a.m. on <br />July 6, 1958. Four men in addition to the superintendent and foreman <br />worked on building seals on single Shift basis, Two seals were erected <br />just inby the first crosscut in 1 and 2 raise off the main The seal in <br />3 raise was repaired, and a new seal was erected outby the old seal off <br />4 raise. (See attached sketch.) Work on the seals was completed at <br />3 p.m. June 9, 1958 <br /> <br />
