Notification of Historic Mine Waste Relocation
Dear Mr. Sorenson:
CLIMAX MINE
Hwy 91
Climax, Colorado 80429
[7191 486-2150
Fax (7191 4862251
RE~~/'VED
~`~Ar~s~
//Diviafoo or Mf+olteh aad Beolog~
During your annual site inspection in 2005, Jeff Todd discussed with you the historic mine waste
removal actions planned in Searle Gulch. At that time, Climax was uncertain as to whether mine
wastes would be disposed within a new repository, in situ, or on one of the existing tailing
impoundments within the Affected Land at Climax. In response, you stated that if mine waste
would be relocated to an existing tailing impoundment or waste dump, your office would require
a 30-day notification only.
Climax has determined that historic mine wastes from the Searle Gulch area will be removed and
relocated within the footprint of the Mayflower Tailing Impoundment. Presently, this project is
in the bid phase and is tentatively scheduled to begin after July 4, 2006. Enclosed is a genera]
map showing the areas within the Mayflower impoundment where waste will be deposited. Sites
from which waste is removed will be stabilized and revegetated using existing or imported
growth media. Likewise, the areas of waste relocation will be stabilized and vegetated using
existing or imported growth media.
If you have any questions or require additional clarifications, please contact me at (719) 486-
2150 ext. 723.
Sincerely,
,~(~
Gary A.
