Sandra Enu•ich •
September 10, 1982
Page Two
Benthic invertebrate sampling has consisted ~f collecting tv:o
El:man dredge samples and ttvo Surber type square foot samples from each
stat.ion`:, pool habitat and riffle habitat, respectively, during late
July, early August. Where no flowing water is found, lour Ekman dre:d~~e
samples are collected from the wettest portion oi' the stream. channe] of
that station. Samples are preserved in the field and returned to n
lab for enumex•ation and identification.
Benthic invertebrate specie<; compos:i.tion and diversity have stayed
consistent with what is typical for intermiia ent and turbid slow hater
streams, however, they have varied considerably. These trends ~uun•ir to
be related more to the _c_ari.abilitt`inherent in temporary streams rather
tllan a_llll y!_C11.;.C_eZr1]31J~~~S.LV r•rs_~f f(~i,tc-~~ ~g'j m' i i~ aC tl Vlt}'. ~~11C !'I(1tiL
notable observation to be F;ainr.i from reviewing several years' of
sampling data is the indication that the henthos population abundance
trends are largely dictated by the sc-~a:;onal stream flow conditions and
to a lesser degree, temperature.
Discussions with John Woodling of 'the CDOIV reveals that the CDOR'
feels that the above yearly aquatic monitorinC; program is redundant
and unnec.essnry, This is evident from tho CAC:?'s recent rejection of
CYCC .fish shocking permit. Furthermore, water quality measures
required under Permit 79-177 are considered by CDOIY 'to he more sensitive
in detecting cl:auges in aquatic community than the above monitorin;;
program.
Based on the above conclusions, it is proposed that the aquatic
monitoring requirements in Permit 79-177 be modified so that the
present aquatic monitoring program be teruli.uated. Iu the future, iC
the datat from CYCC's water quality monitorin€; program inclical.es a
significant degradation in water quality as defined in Permit 79-177,
CYCC tvi.ll re=ume sampling the stream system.
Pour quic]c response to this issue would he greatly apprec.iaLcd.
If there are any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
COLORADO PAMPA COAL COVPA\'1'
/i f~,1 ~
~.
Clem Parkin
Environmental Coordinator
CP : rl~h
cc: G.
