DATE: January 26, 2006
TO: Jim Stark and Sandy Brown
FROM: Dan Mathews
RE: OC#2 Mine Vegetation Sample Results
Procedures
Jim and I sampled vegetation cover and production at the OC#2 Mine on June 27
and June 28, 2005. We ran 73 systematically distributed cover transects, covering the
entirety of the small reclaimed area. 47 of the transects were on the primary facilities
area on the reclaimed slope, the remaining 26 transects were on the smaller sediment
pond/topsoil stockpile area at the base of the slope. Each cover transect was 5 meters in
length, and we took 10 cover readings at one meter intervals along each transect, for a
total of 50 cover readings per transect. Cover readings were taken using a tripod
mounted ocular point bar, with 10 scopes spaced along the bar (a "10 point frame").
Cover summary data is presented in an attached spreadsheet, "7-2005 OC#2 Cover Data".
Count #1 through #47 aze the reclaimed slope area transects. Count #48 through #73 are
the pond stockpile transects.
At the 1 m point to the right side of each transect we placed a rectangular quadrat
frame and clipped and bagged the non-noxious current years herbaceous growth from
each quadrat. 1 sq. meter quadrats (1/2m x 2m) were used in the low productivity facility
reclamation area; '/4 sq. meter quadrats (1/2m x 1/2m) were clipped in the higher
productivity pond/stockpile azea. The non-vegetated pond inslopes and pond bottom
were excluded from the sample area. Samples were oven dried and weighed at CSU.
Production sample results are listed in an attached spreadsheet, "7-2005 OC#2 Production
Data". The sample bag contents corresponding to Count # 1 through #26 were the %a
meter quadrat clippings from the pond/stockpile area; dry weights were multiplied by 4 to
obtain grams per square meter. Bag contents corresponding to Count #27 through #73
were from the 1 square meter quadrats, for which no conversion was necessary.
Standards and Results
Cover Standard Reclaim Cover Sample Mean
40.5% (i.e. 90% of 45%) 31.1%
Production Standazd Reclaim Production Sample Mean
131.1 grams/sq. m 134 grams/sq. m
(90% of 145.7 g/sq.m; or 1300 lbs/acre)
