Rama.
Damson Direnor
DATE: April 20, 1990
T0: Tony Waldron & Mike Sav
FROM: Jim Pendleton
RE: Eagle. Mine O~and ~efiveyor Problem - 4erbal Approval
Terrell Johnson telephoned at 3:05 pm, Friday, April 20, 1990 to inform us of
a serious operational situation which has curtailed operation of the Eagle
Mine. The overland conveyor which carries their product coal from the portal
over the highway and the river to the loadout facilities has developed a
serious problem. As of several weeks ago, the belt began breaking at the
inversion point near the stacker end. They have expended approximately
5100,000 to replace the entire belt and it continues to fail. At the point at
which he called they were shut down. Without the belt operating the mine
cannot produce coal. They are flying-in consultants and representatives from
the design and manufacturing firms. They fear it may take several weeks to
resolve the problem and return the belt to normal operation.
In order to return the mine to operation, Terrell requested permission to
temporarily cease inverting the belt. He observed that the conveyor is
completly contained by the tube. He committed to complete cleanup of any
fines which might accidentally exit containment.
Based upon Terrell 's commitments, I granted verbal permission to cease
inverting the belt for two weeks. I instructed him to forward a letter
documenting the above commitments and two week deadline, via FAX, as soon as
possible. I further indicated that Tony would contact him at the first
opportunity next week, in order to obtain more detail and to keep abreast of
theior progress in diagnosing and resolving the problem.
cc: Mike Long
JP/jP
