Please be assured that your
concern for safeguarding water quality and other environmental values of the
San Luis area is of paramount importance to the Department of Natural
Resources and Office of Mined Land Reclamation. We have been working
continuously with local citizen groups and Battle Mountain Gold
representatives to resolve this matter in an expeditious manner.
Extensive environmental monitoring to date has shown that there have not been
any offsite environmental effects from the mine site. Cyanide levt~ls in the
ponds have been reduced significantly, since the company began implementation
of cyanide reduction techniques at the site. In addition, we are in the
process of reviewing a revision to the mine plan that, upon ap3roval and
implementation, should ensure that elevated cyanide levels will not occur
again.
Both Ken Salazar and I thank you for your concern
contact me, if you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,
MICHAEL B.
