r

..

•
•
LABORATORY INVESTIGATION
Four bag samples were collected for gradation analyses and a Los
Mgeles abrasion test. Mechanical analysis charts are shown in Figures
10 and 11. Course gravel (retained on 3/4 inch sieve) was found In all
five test holes and ranged Prom 1.8 weight percent In test hole 5 to
13.0 weight percent in test hole 3, with an average 7.3 percent for all
four samples. Total gravel (retained on No. 4 sieve) ranged from 31.1
percent in test hole 2 to 48.9 percent In test hole 3, with an average
of 37.6 percent Por all four samples. The bulk of the aggregate in all
but one test hole was sand. Total sand (passing No. 4 sieve but retained
by No. 200) varied from 44.1 percent in test hole 3 to 67.2 percent In
test hole 2, with an average oP 56.4 percent. Fines (passing No. 200
sieve) ranged from 1.7 percent to 9.8 percent. One Los Angeles Abra-
sion Test (ASTM, C-535, 131) was performed on a sample from test hole
4. This test was performed by Western Testing Laboratories, Inc. The
results of the test using 500 revoluttons - Grading A, was 33.0 per-
cent wear. This is well within the maximum of 45 percent wear deslg.
noted by AASHTO T96.
VOLUME ESTIMATION
Volume of the overburden and aggregate was based an the average
thickness obtained from the drilling investigation, multiplied by the
area, obtained from a topographic map. The area used for volume calcu-
lotions was 1.77 million square feet. This area was multiplied by the
average aggregate thickness of 41.5 feet which results in a volume of
approximately 2.7 million cubic yards. Based on a value oP 1.64 tons
per Cubic yard, this amounts to approximately 4.5 million tons oP aggre-
gate on the site. The value of 1.64 tons per cubic yard was derived
-4-
L

•
•
•
