The hole is approximately 15 feet in
diameter and is estimated to be about 100 feet deep. The Coal
Program, through Bruce Stover, has contracted to have a barrier
fence with warning signs attached erected around the opening.
This area is adjacent to a road and is apparently used by area
residents for recreational purposes, judging by the debris strewn
around the site. I would anticipate that additional features
will develop in the future along the strike of the stope mining.
I request that the Inactive Mines Program safeguard the opening.
The opening is located within the revoked Sunlight Mine permit
area. However, it appears that the stope mining areas were not
disturbed or utilized subsequent to August 3, 1977. To my
knowledge, the ex-permittee did not disturb this portion of the
mine area. The ex-permittee has no regulatory obligation nor
reclamation responsibility for this feature.
Reclamation of this feature would be desirable during the 1994
construction season. This is primarily due to the ease of access
and use which the site receives.
Please contact me if you need additional information.
CC:X Erica Crosby
C:\sunlite
