MINERS ING
CONSTRUCTION SPECIALfSTS
MINING and CIVIL CONSTRUCTION
January 24, 1994
Colorado Department of Transportation
606 South Ninth Street
Grand Junction, CO 81501
Attention: John Smith
Subject: Hawks Nest Coal Silo Demolition
Dear Mr. Smith;
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of Miners Inc. (Miners) schedule and the
procedures that will be employed in relation to the demolition of the Hawks Nest Coal Silos.
Miners anticipates that the State of Colorado will issue a Notice to Proceed on January 31,
1994. Miners will mobilize on to the Hawks Nest site immediately. A copy of the project
schedule and site plan have been enclosed for your information.
It will be necessary for Miners to close the old highway 133 for safety purposes. Miners w i I I
use, as you have instructed, a Type III moveable barricade. The barricade will be placed just
after the entrance to the guest house.
Miners intends to excavate a falling pit that will intersect with the old highway 133. The
silos will be demolished by falling them into the excavated pit. The concrete material will
then be broken and buried within the limits of the site. Some material will be buried under
the existing roadway. Miners will place the broken concrete material a minimum of four
feet(measured vertically) below the lowest elevation of the existing roadway. All fill
materials place over the broken concrete and in the limits of the existing roadway will be
compacted to a minimum of 95%. A qualified testing lab will perform the compaction tests
and a copy of the report will be transmitted to you.
All other procedures outlined in your letter to Eric Crosby, dated Ocotober 27, 1993, will be
followed. Installation of the actual asphalt surface will have to be delayed until the ambient
temperature is adequate to insure proper installation. As a temporary measure Miners
proposes to place and compact four inches of Class 6 roadbase. Once the ambient temperature
is adequate to insure proper installation, the temporary roadbase will be removed and
replaced with the actual asphalt surface. Miners anticipates this operation will occur
sometime in April or May depending on weather conditions.
9137 E.
