SHELTON, Director
April 24, 1987
IAr. Dave Beverlin
Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company
P.O. Box 176
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
Re: South of Shop Revegetation Standards (File C-80-001)
Dear Mr. Beverlin:
On Wednesday, April 22, 1987, we briefly discussed what appropriate
revegetation standards for reclaiming the South of Shop slide area would
entail. After our conversation, I researched this subject, and found the
enclosed memorandum from Sandy Brown to the Edna Mine file. Consistent with
previous research, this memo indicates that the South-of-Shop slide area was
bonded under the 1976 Act, and mined prior to August 3, 1977. Therefore, the
vegetation standards of the 1976 Act are applicable for revegetation efforts
at the South-of-Shop area.
As noted in the enclosed memo, the 1976 Act requires that the coal operator
establish a diverse, effective and long lasting vegetative cover which is
capable of self regeneration, and is at least equal in extent of cover to the
natural vegetation of surrounding, undisturbed areas.
The enclosed memo tabulates findings of a Pittsburg and Midway cover survey
performed as part of a bond release request. These findings should serve as a
guideline for establishing minimum cover requirements at the South of Shop
area.
If, after reviewing the enclosed memo, you have any questions regarding this
matter, please contact John Doerfer or me.
Sincerely,
Steven G.
