Lonq
Division Dueclnr
The Division of Minerals and Geology is currently planning the remaining
reclamation work to be performed at the Hawk's Nest Mine. The Hawks Nest Mine
site was ordered to be reclaimed by the Department of Natural Resources, Mined
Land Reclamation Board. Initial reclamation of the site was completed during the
Fall of 1991. The Division plane to perform reclamation work at the remainder
of the mine site, including the Coal Silo Facility.
The Coal Silo Facilities were owned by Western Slope Carbon Inc. as part of the
Hawk's Neet Coal Hining Operation. The Silos are adjacent to the Old Highway 133
in Delta and Gunnison Counties. The removal of the storage silos will require
blasting that may disrupt the use of the Old Highway 133, The Division proposes
to have the Silos fall in the location of the Old Highway to protect the existing
rail lines utilized by the West Elk Mine and the adjacent substation.
The Division requests that the Old Highway 133 be closed during the blasting and
removal of the concrete Silos. The removal of the concrete will occur as rapidly
as possible, but the road may need to be closed for an extended period of time.
At this point in time I am unsure of the damage that will incur with the old
highway. The Division will ensure that the road will be graded and repaved after
final clean up of the concrete. The remaining roads will be used to haul the
concrete to a designated location.
Enclosed, please find a map Locating the Silos and Highway 133. The Division
hopes to start the project in late July or Auqust. Amore specific date will be
known at a later time. The Division requests a response by DOT by Mid-June
regarding the closure of the Old Highway.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate
to contact me at 866-3567.
Sincerely,
~. , .
G~
-~,
Erica S.
