~,
United States Department of the Interior
Dear Reviewer:
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT
White River Resource Area
73544 Highway 64
Meeker, Colorado 81641 - JANUARY 11, 1999
This Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) on the proposed
Yankee Gulch Sodium Minerals Project for American Soda, L.L.P. is
submitted for your review and comment. This DEIS has been
prepared to analyze the potential impacts of sodium solution
mining in the Piceance Basin of Rio Blanco County, Colorado.
If you wish to comment on the DEIS, we request that you make your
' comments as specific as possible. Comments will be more helpful
if they include suggested changes, sources, or methodologies.
Comments that contain only opinions or preferences will not
receive a formal response; however, they will be considered and
included as part of the BLM decision making process.
' Two public meetings are scheduled to receive comments for this
DEIS. The first will be held at the BLM office at 73544 Highway
64 in Meeker, Colorado at 7:00 p.m. on February 10, 1999. The
' second will be held at the Town Hall Council Chambers, 222 Grand
Valley Way, Parachute, Colorado at 7:00 p.m. on February 11,
1999. Address all comments concerning this DEIS to Mr. Larry
' Shults, Natural Resource Specialist, U.S. Bureau of Land
Management, white River Resource Area, 73544 Highway 64, Meeker,
CO 81641.
' This DEIS was prepared pursuant to the National Environmental
Policy Act, and other regulations and statutes, to address
possible environmental and socio-economic impacts which could
' result from the project and to solicit public comments and
concerns. This DEIS is not a decision document. Its purpose is
to inform the public of the impacts associated with implementing
the companies' commercial sodium mining proposal and to evaluate
' alternatives to the proposal. This DEIS is also intended to
provide information to other regulatory agencies for use in their
decision making process for other permits required for
implementation of the project.
Please retain this copy of the DEIS for future reference. A copy
' of the EIS has been sent to affected Government agencies and to
those persons who responded to scoping or otherwise indicated to
BLM that they wished to receive a copy of the DEIS. Copies of
the DEIS are available for public inspection at the Bureau of
' Land Management, 73544 Highway 64, Meeker, CO 81641.
SiQnc~er~el~y,~,~Q~
' John J.
