Long
Division Director
Subject: Status of Permit C-1984-065, Coal Ridge No. 1 Mine
Dear Ms. Maurer:
This letter is in response to, and follows up on, our telephone conversations of February 26 and
27, 2002. Rules cited herein are those of the Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board for Coal Mining (Rules). During the telephone call, your inquiry was
expressed in two ways. First, "If mining activities at the Coal Ridge Mine No. 1 resume, would
they need a permit revision?", or second, "Can they resume mining activity under the current
permit?"
Permits from our office are issued based on approved applications that ensure compliance with the
Rules. An applicant is bound, under a Permit, to comply with the provisions of its application.
An application for renewal of Permit C-1984-065 (Permit) was submitted to our offices on
January 26, 2001. The applicant, in this application, indicated the current status of the Permit to be
"Permanent Cessation (Reclamation Only)." The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
proposed a decision to approve this application on July 25, 2001. The proposed decision became
effective on September 7, 2001, and the Permit was subsequently renewed for a period of 5 yeazs,
beginning October 9, 2001. The application, as approved, is incorporated into the Permit.
The opinion of the Division of Minerals and Geology is, therefore, that a permit revision to Permit
C-1984-065 is required for the resumption of activities associated with the extraction of coal at the
Coal Ridge No. 1 Mine.
Yours truly,
Syron~G.
