Box 469 <br />Fort Collins, Colorado 80522 <br />Re: Grazing Plan - Grassy Gap tAine - File No. C-81-039 <br />Dear Mr. Sherman: <br />The Division has received the information you submitted in order to obtain <br />permission to graze sheep at the Grassy Gap mine. As submitted, the <br />information does not contain adequate detail to be considered a grazing plan. <br />However, as you are not proposing to actively graze the area, a full plan is <br />not required at this time. <br />Rule 4,15.5 requires that grazing be managed to promote the post-mining land <br />use and not be allowed to interfere vegetation sampling. Therefore, as long <br />as the infrequent grazing which occurs does not interfere with the potential <br />of the reclaimed areas to support the post-mining land use, the operation <br />would be in compliance with this rule. If however the area was severely <br />overgrazed or otherwise damaged, the Rockcastle Company could be subject to <br />enforcement action. <br />It should be noted that the Division does encourage grazing on reclaimed <br />areas to provide evidence that the post-mining land use can be supported. <br />Grazing should occur in the 8th and 9th years, and earlier if possible. Prior <br />to actively grazing the area, a complete grazing plan should be submitted to <br />the Division. This plan would include: the carrying capacity of the area <br />(AUM's), the number of animals to be grazed, percent utilization of the stand, <br />and a schedule of animal rotation to different areas.
