Mountain Coal Company Internal Correspondence ' `
Date: September 3, 1997 "
Subject: COLORADO GUEST RANCH CABIN SURVEY
AUGUST 29,1997
FroMLocation: NORM EVERY ~ ~~~
To/Location: PHIL SCHMIDT
The cabin owned by Colorado Guest Ranch (Larry and Elaine Mautz) waz surveyed by MCC on August 29, 1997.
Conventional survey techniques were used and the work was done with a one second direct reading theodolite, top
mount electronic distance meter, and a Wild NA2 level. Control point and cabin elevations were determined by
trigonometric methods and checked with differential levels at the cabin itself. The control coordinates (X, Y & Z)
were established from the existing MCC subsidence survey control network. This network is a series of permanent
instrument stations which are typically 3" to 6" steel pipes set in the ground in concrete with a threaded mount on
top for the theodolite. The survey waz conducted and checked by licensed Professional Land Surveyors.
Permanent instrument station "E", which has been used as the benchmark for the previous cabin and subsidence
stutieys, waz damaged lazt spring, apparently by vandals, and waz reset in concrete for this cabin survey. New X, Y
& Z coordinates were established for station "E" from the other existing permanent stations.
The attached listings show the comparative coordinates for the cabin surveys tom December 7, 1994 (pre-mining)
through August 29, 1997. The elevations for dte cabin on 829197 are approximately 0.4' higher than the elevations
tom the previous stuvey on 6/5/96. The northings of the two surveys are within 0.1' of each other. The eaztings of
the most recent survey are approximately 0.4' east of the previous survey. The accuracy of the survey technique is
approximately "plus or minus" 0.1'. The difference in the elevations and eaztings in addition to the ertor of stuey
is perceived to be the difference in the coordinates for the reestablished station "E" and the previous coordinates for
the undisttubed station "E". This perception is verified by the elevations of the most recent survey actually being
higher than the previous survey.
The following chart shows the trend of the lazt several surveys of the cabin.
DATE OF POIIVT NORTHING EASTING ELEVATION
SURVEY DESCRIPTION
7/6/95 NW CORNER 396231.61 1437811.55 7640.75
6/5/96_ NW CORNER 396231.89 1437811.09 7640.40
8!29/97 NW CORNER 396231.85 1437811.39 7640.88
7!6/95 StAB 346236.85 1437825.89 7640.41
6/5/96 SLAB 396237.15 1437825.46 7640.05
829/97 SLAB 396237.14 1437825.81 7640.50
7/6/95 NE CORNER 396217.36 1437849.98 7640.63
6/5/96 NE CORNER 396217.68 1437849.49 7640.27
829/97 NE CORNER 396217.52 1437849.98 7640.69
7/6!95 SE CORNER .396193.90 1437841.34 7640.61
b/5/96 SE CORNER 396194.23 1437840.88 7640.28
8/29/97 SE CORNER 396194.10 1437841.23 7640.67
7/6/95 SW CORNER 396208.59 1437800.78 7640.82
6/5/96 SW CORNER 396208.83 1437800.66 7640.35
829/97 SW CORNER 396208.78 1437801.14 7640.78
West Elk Mine, Somerset, Colorado
