Site Status Summary
Old Refuse Pile Project Area
Huntsman Project
The Huntsman Project Area is an approximately six acre area situated on the side slope of
a much larger coal refuse disposal area, located just east of the newly constructed Dutch
Creek stream channel. Reclamation of the Huntsman area was completed in 1997. Silt
fence and dozer hummocks were the primary Best Management Practices employed in
this area. The dozer hummocks were very effective in disrupting runoffpatterns, and at
containing sediment generated from the Project Area until vegetafion became established.
Due to the effectiveness of the vegetative cover at controlling erosion, the silt fence was
removed from this area. The vegetative cover at the Huntsman Project Area was
measured to be 89% in the late summer of 2005. This degree of vegetative cover, which
exceeds the pre-reclamation vegetative cover by an estimated 74%, effectively minimizes
erosion at the Project Area.
Bear Creek Project
The Bear Creek Project Area is situated on the side slope of a much larger coal refuse
disposal area, and is located at the far easterly portion of the stormwater permit area,
adjacent to the Huntsman Project Area. Reclamation at the Bear Creek Project Area was
completed during the 1999 construction season. Approximately six acres of steep slopes
were reclaimed during the course of this project.
Multiple Best Management Practices were implemented in the Beaz Creek Project Area,
including the use of severe surface scarification prior to seeding, shmb planting,
placement of slash barriers and the use of silt fence.
The vegetative cover at this area was measured to be 77% in the late summer of 2005. A
cattle exclosure was constructed around the area in 2001, resulting in significant
vegetative establishment within the area over a short period of time. Grazing is now
allowed in the azea as part of a lazger cattle management plan implemented by the U. S.
Forest Service. Because the vegetative cover at the Project Area is effective at
minimizing erosion, evidence of off-site sedimentation has not been observed.
East of Road A Project Area
Reclamation construction was completed in this area during I999. This is a generally flat
lying azea that is bisected by the newly constructed Dutch Creek channel. Grazing of the
area occurs as part of a larger cattle management plan implemented in Coal Basin by the
U. S. Forest Service. Best Management Practices implemented during and following
reclamation construction included the use of severe surface roughening, placement of silt
fence, construction of small earthen berms and the placement of weed free straw bales.
Vegetative cover in this area was measured to be 64% in the late summer of 2005, well
exceeding the estimated pre-reclamation cover of 5%.
