Sorenson, Allen ~ ~ f' ~S ~ G''~~/`~ ~~'~ ~ ~ 'y
From: Shuey, Steve
Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2005 1:31 PM
To: Sorenson, Allen
Subject: Climax Mine wildlife use of surface waters
Regarding the Climax Molybdenum plans, submitted to DMG on May 24, 2005, to monitor wildlife use of surface water
bodies, I have the following comments:
There should be several observation events at each site, preferably in differing weather conditions;
• Each site should be monitored at various times of the day, focusing the majority of events at dawn and dusk;
• Fall monitoring far waterfowl should take place no earlier than October 1;
• Fall monitoring for mammals should be conducted prior to the first big game hunting season that generally disrupts the
animals natural patterns;
• Many wildlife signs are hard to see on foot, let alone by vehicle. I suggest the perimeter of each impoundment, at
waters edge (if possible) be walked to survey for signs indicating wildlife may be accessing the water resource. If not
the complete shoreline, then 'on foot' survey efforts should be concentrated in stretches where cover and terrain are
more likely to be favored by wildlife, rather than surveying random stretches as proposed.
I would be happy to review this report upon submittal and make recommendations for remedial actions if necessary
Steve Shuey
